Palaeo-ground

The dinosaur bones are dusted every day.
Amongst shuffling feet beats and hollow sonorous squawking.
Perched atop the brittle frame, skulking cavities for eyes
Prey down on the shh shh shh.

What sound does it make?
when brightly each melody is extracted from the jagged head
a tap, tap timbre on the skull-cap.

What dreams has it held?
Brachio-tyranny! Forest muncher! Searching the blue.
Fireball as it approaches, Vesuvius, Pompeii explode
In the blink of a scaly eyelid 1 million years before.

Fire! Fire! The sun! The earth!
A bellow in the bracken
Before his time is shattered.
The poor aunt's are in town to stay
And they come for one hour
or two.

The dinosaur bones
are dusted
everyday
